HOLMER GREEN SENIOR SCHOOL - NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2019

Dear Parents and Carers

Congratulations to all our Year 7 students who have now completed their first term with us.  It is great to have met so many of you and to have seen so many of you receive achievement points, in particular for ‘helpful actions’ around the school.  Our community is at its best when we all work positively in it.

I have been hugely proud and in awe of what some of our students have been doing both within school, as well as out of school.  You will see a small sample of articles outlining some of these successes.

Open Evening was a huge success this term not only because of the commitment of our staff, governors and parents, but also of our students who are very personable and keen to take up any opportunity to speak to prospective families.  Seven students really stood out who presented on the stage for both talks and really stole the show.  Well done.  Great examples of our students taking opportunities and pushing themselves.

Our new Oracy programme is in full swing and I must thank Holmer Green Village Society, as well as others for supporting the school to help interview our students.  The Quiz Night and Year 7 Meet and Greet were great events and I must thank all of those who attended, but in particular the PTA for supporting these and raising funds for the school.

Many of our students have taken part in extra-curricular and enrichment experiences this term including two very successful Geography trips, a wealth of sporting fixtures and a great take up of our Duke of Edinburgh programme which goes from strength to strength.  Finally, our Sixth Form students are hard at work with UCAS/Apprenticeship applications so I wish them all the best of luck in the process and I am so impressed by a number of our students who have had the determination to apply for places at either Oxford or Cambridge.

I wish you all a safe and happy half-term.

Kindest regards,

Ed Hillyard

Student Hi-Vis

As the evenings close in we are mindful of student safety on Parish Piece.  Whilst the road is lit by streetlights when dark, it can be very busy at times.  Students are welcome to wear High Vis armbands or tabards over their schools coats in order to increase visibility and safety as students walk to or from school.   These products are widely available online and are not expensive.  These can then be removed when students enter school, and would not require the purchase of any additional winter coats.

I would also like to remind parents and carers to please avoid driving down Parish Piece wherever possible.  As you will be aware, there is limited pavement space which makes the road heavily congested for any road users.  Parking space is also very limited for drop-offs or collections.

Please contact me at the School if you have any questions about the issue of student safety along Parish Piece and beyond.

Thank you for your support

Head of Years Update - November 2019

Year 7 - Mr McMaster

Year 8 - Miss Sexton

Year 9 - Miss Stratton

Year 10 - Ms McShane

Year 11 - Mr Callender

Preparation for University and Apprenticeships

We are continuing to prepare our sixth formers for what to expect at University and Apprenticeship application and interview stage.

Recently ASK (the Apprenticeship Advisory Service) came in to run a typical assessment centre workshop. This involved a group challenge constructing towers out of marshmallows and spaghetti!  As well as constructing some rather sticky towers, our students learned that these activities are designed to assess their individual skills and strengths, and how they operate as part of a team. #gatsby5 #gatsby7 #careers #inspiringfutures

Duke of Edinburgh Awards Evening

We were delighted to award 43 Year 10 students with their Bronze Award and also 18 Year 11 students with their Silver Award at the Presentation Evening on 7 October 2019.

Kate Aldersley from Duke of Edinburgh came to present the awards and reminded the students how proud they should be with their achievements and of all the new skills they had learned.  She also noted the hours of voluntary work that the students had carried out to support their community.

We have 9 Year 13 students completing their Gold Awards this year so hopefully they will be attending their presentation at Buckingham Palace next May.

A very big thank you for Miss Stratton for giving up some many hours including weekends to support these programmes and also to Mr McMaster and Miss Read for assisting this year.
