Religious Studies - A Level

If you are interested in taking Religious Studies A Level, here are some tasks to help you out with getting a taster of what it is we do for A level. Mr Sheen and I have put together some tasks that we expect you to do for first day back. Even if you decide not to do the subject I hope you have some fund as part of the process.

Some are easier than others but should give you an idea of what the A level is like. The A level is very different from the GCSE with regards to topic but what remains the same is the level of discussion and focus on evaluation.

With regards to the tasks, please be aware that these will not be marked but will be expected to be handed in on the first lesson. The purpose of this work is to get you engaged in the A level and allow Mr Sheen and myself to get an idea of how you approach the topics and where we need to shape our lessons to support you further.

In the R drive (Religious Studies folder) there is a folder called 'Summer Bridging work year 11-12'. In this folder has everything you need (with the exception of the movies).

Please complete the tasks in the following order;

  • Watch the movie Snowpiercer (found in the school Video drive).
  • Write around a 500 word review (this should be as close to 500 as possible and word count should be included at the bottom of your review). The review should focus on how ethical decisions were made. Where the people who created the train (the engine room) right in how they chose to run the train?
  • Watch the movie the Matrix (found in the school Video drive)
  • Write around a 500 word review (this should be as close to 500 as possible and word count should be included at the bottom of your review). The review should focus on the idea of reality? How do we know what is real or not? Which pill would you take and why?
  • Listen to the podcasts for both Philosophy and Ethics and make notes as you go. https://thepanpsycast.com/episodes-by-category : 1 - Plato; 2 - Aristotle; 5 - Utilitarianism parts 1, 2 and 3; 82 - Paley parts 1 and 2.
  • Pick one of the tasks from the Summer Bridging work - Ethics. Complete all tasks on the worksheet
  • Pick one of the tasks from the Summer Bridging work - Philosophy. Complete all tasks on the worksheet.

(IF YOU WANT TO COMPLETE BOTH TASKS FEEL FREE BUT ONLY ONE IS EXPECTED)

If you have any questions please email me directly for ETHICS (kirkpatrickj@holmer.ork.uk) and Mr Sheen (sheend@holmer.org.uk) for Philosophy. Any general questions also feel free to email me.
