Design and Technology at HGSS is a diverse subject area with lessons being taught by seven creative, passionate and hardworking members of staff.

Design and Technology is a practical and valuable subject.  It enables children and young people to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves, their community and their nation. Students develop a critical understanding of the impact of design and technology on daily life and the wider world.

Design and Technology at HGSS should allow students:

  • To provide opportunities to develop their capability and creativity skills
  • How to take risks and so become more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable young individuals.
  • To combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding in order to create high quality products.
  • To design and make products that solve genuine, relevant problems within different contexts whilst considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.
  • To do this effectively, they will acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on additional disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.

In Year 7 and 8 students will study a range of material areas in a carousel system. The material areas covered are Food, Graphics, Resistant Materials and IT.  In each area students will undertake practical tasks and make a range of products. They will learn about the different materials, tools, equipment and processes used as well as designing and making products.

At the end of Year 8 students will have the opportunity to specialise in two of the four subject areas within the department to enable them to participate in more in depth projects in Year 9.  These projects are much more closely linked to GCSE style work to enable students to make informed choices regarding their GCSE options at the end of the year.

Year 10 and 11 students will work towards their chosen GCSE in Design and Technology.

In year 12 and 13 students have the ability to continue further study into Food Technology or 3D Product Design.
