I’m married to Esther, my long-suffering best friend, and we are the proud parents of Henry, who has recently completed his degree in Aerospace Engineering at Nottingham. Term: May 2020 to May 2024

I am Head of the Religious Studies Department at Holmer Green Senior School.  I have been teaching for 16 years and using my skills as an examiner have a track record of raising standards for learners.  I am a big believer that education is not just about learning the course in school but creating well rounded individuals who are inquisitive about the world around them.  It is for these reasons I joined the Governors at HGSS, to create well rounded individuals and help them to achieve their goals.

In my spare time I am a qualified Dance teacher and have a great passion for the arts'

Gareth Davies - Community Governor

Term: March 2020 - 2024

As Head of an independent prep school for the last 14 years, I was delighted to volunteer as a Community Governor of HGSS, to broaden my own experience in the state sector and at secondary level. With a vested interest as the father of two daughters at the school, I am keen to contribute to the school’s ongoing development and importance within the local community. I share many of the school’s values and am committed to offering a broad and enriching education, where children’s personal and social development is just as important as their academic development.

With a Masters in Educational Leadership and School Improvement, I have a wide range of educational experience to offer having served on Southend LSCB, as a compliance and team inspector for ISI and chaired the IAPS Finance Committee and sat on Council. I am also a governor of a local boys only grammar school and a board member of iTrust charity.

When time allows, I enjoy spending time with my family, walking my dog, watching Swansea City and rugby, as well as occasionally playing cricket or hacking my way around a golf course.

Term: December 2021 - December 2025

I have working in education for 25 years; I have been the headteacher of an outstanding primary school in Herts, since June 2010. I have significant experience of school governance in my role as headteacher, but also as a community governor.

I am also a Hertfordshire Improvement Partner and support four schools in Herts with their continued school improvement by monitoring the overall effectiveness of the school. I am passionate about ensuring all pupils have the opportunity to thrive at school, particularly the vulnerable pupils who may have significant barriers to their learning. I am also a great advocate of supporting the mental health and well-being of the whole school community.  I am hoping that my experience within school leadership, specifically in relation to school improvement, will bring a valuable skill set to the board.

I have two children at HGSS, they are currently in years 12 and 10 and one child at university. I have seen my children thrive at the school and wanted the opportunity to contribute to the school’s further development and improvement.

Apart from spending most of the weekend on a freezing football pitch, watching my son and one of my daughters play, I enjoy reading, visiting the theatre, travelling and socialising with friends.

I have recently been appointed as Parent Governor.  I have lived locally for 10 years and have two daughters, one who is currently at HGSS and the other due to join the school this year.

I am currently Assistant Headteacher at Hazlemere Church of England School. Working in a feeder school to Holmer Green gives me a good understanding of the local community and the needs of the children in the area.  I have worked in Primary education for over twenty years and I am hoping that my experience within the education sector will support my role as a governor.

Mike Salem (Member)

Mike Salem - Member

Term:  March 2021 - March 2025

Perhaps the youngest of the Governing Body, I gladly accepted the invitation to continue my support to our community in 2020.

I completed my education at HGSS in 2019 and currently read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the London School of Economics. My key mission is to maintain, and more importantly build on, the strong foundation that the school created in the last couple of years, having seen first-hand the excellent progress the school has made. I also would like to see students challenging themselves and pursuing the pathway they wish to thrive in. I am a deep enthusiast when it comes to the importance of community spirit and the role of the individual in their community and I look forward to strengthening the school’s role and relationship in Holmer Green as a key institution of education.

Outside academia and my work, some of my interests include: exploring the British countryside and its history, tennis, sailing, and playing the bassoon.
