Welcome As Deputy Head of Sixth form, I take great pride in supporting students with the transition from Year 11 into Sixth Form. Having worked within the Pastoral Team at HGSS for 8 years, I have watched the success of many of our students from Year 7 through to the end of Year 13 who have now taken the first step on to exciting opportunities. I meet with any students who maybe struggling and address and investigate any concerns that they may have so that they can feel heard and supported within the Sixth Form. Mrs Smith (UCAS co-ordinator) is responsible for processing all Year 13 University applications via the UCAS platform. This involves guiding students through the application process, providing support with personal statements and coordinating references. Regular meetings are offered and held with students as they navigate the application process and support is provided to both students and tutors to keep them up to date with the latest guidance surrounding applying to universities and the differing deadlines. We also have Mrs Martin, our Key Stage 5 Support Manager and Mrs Panayiotou our Sixth Form Learning Mentor who helps students overcome barriers to learning. They are always there to listen. We have a team of Academic Tutors who are there for their students if they have any issues or concerns, and who provide excellent pastoral support. Students who are new to Holmer Green Senior School, are invited to join our Induction days, which include taster lessons as well as a programme of activities which will help you to make new friends and settle in quickly. Our results are due to our knowledge of our students, through regular assessment which allows us as a Sixth Form team to meet and discuss where interventions and support are needed. Our expectations of our students are high as we want our them to be the best versions of themselves. Students receive teaching of the highest quality; our groups are smaller than you may get in larger Sixth Forms, and we are able to provide individual support in and out of the classroom. Kodey McMaster, Deputy Head of Sixth Form
A word from our Head Students Max HGSS Sixth Form continually fosters a supportive and vibrant environment for its students. The school’s core values are reflected not only in the professionalism and commitment of its staff, who work extremely hard and have great passion for their respective subjects, but also in the determination and kindness that define every Sixth Form student. The student leadership team exemplifies these values by promoting unity and maintaining an inclusive Sixth Form community, rather than two separate year groups. Our current project of interviewing and selecting candidates for the new Year 12 representative roles demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that every student has an equal voice in our community. We hope this will lead to meaningful improvements within our school for years to come. In our Sixth Form, we promote a culture of equality, making sure that individuals from all backgrounds, experiences and academic abilities feel valued and confident to take part in school activities and initiatives. In particular, our large team of Mind Mentors are given a designated student from a younger year to care for, allowing for a distinctive connection to be made. This ensures that our school is a setting that is interconnected no matter your age or background, which guarantees that everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive academically and socially. We actively encourage students to engage in extracurricular activities that strengthen personal development and collaboration. These opportunities help cultivate transferable skills that are highly valued and can make students stand out when applying for apprenticeships, university and other post-Sixth Form pathways. This is reflected in the significant number of our students who hold leadership roles and use them to drive meaningful developments within our Sixth Form. Roles ranging from subject mentors to subject-specific scholars most importantly enhance personal growth but also makes applications for competitive courses and apprenticeships more compelling, with many students already receiving offers from Russel Group universities as a result. Amelie Sixth Form is not solely focused on academics but also about developing essential life skills such as independence, teamwork, and resilience. One way the sixth form implements these skills is through the weekly enrichment sessions offered here which include life skills, sports and creative workshops. Every half term, sixth formers have the opportunity to switch up their enrichment rotation, allowing them to engage in a diverse array of activities. These sessions also provide ample support and guidance to students in constructing and tailoring their personal statements to the courses they would like to apply for after Sixth Form, as well as allowing students to thoroughly research the different pathways that are available. Sixth form staff work tirelessly to ensure that all students feel supported throughout this process, and we are pleased to announce that several students have already received offers from prestigious universities. Other initiatives such as sports leaders and mind mentoring have continued to be popular, and year 12 students are given the opportunity to apply for the role of `year 12 representatives`. This is a fantastic opportunity which ensures that any feedback individuals may have is listened to by the sixth form leadership team, which further sustains the welcoming and safe atmosphere of the sixth form overall. Over the past year, the sixth form leadership team has run events raising money for scoliosis, sepsis, and the RSPCA, and we look forward to planning more projects over the next few months. We are excited for the year ahead, with all that is happening in Sixth Form, and we are confident that the high engagement and readiness to learn from students, as well as the support and care from staff will continue, so we can all be the best versions of

Introduction to courses The jump from GCSE to A Level or Level 3 Vocational courses is a significant one. This applies not only to the level of understanding required, but also your capacity to work independently. We strongly encourage applicants to be realistic about their abilities and choose subjects where their predicted grades meet the grade criteria, and where the route of study matches their learning preferences in terms of coursework and examination performance. From the start of Year 12, you will find a real difference in the demands placed upon you and it is important that you choose your subjects carefully and are realistic about your pathways. A Levels We provide a wide range of A Levels at HGSS Sixth Form. Assessments for A Levels can be examination and/or Coursework based. Students will sit an internal exam at the end of Year 12, and their A Level assessment at the end of Year 13 determines the entire overall result in most subjects. Level 3 Vocational courses: BTEC or CTEC AAQs (Extended Certificates) These Level 3 courses (Extended Certificates) qualify for points on the ‘UCAS Tariff’ for entry into higher education, in the same way that A Level qualifications do. BTEC/CTEC AAQs can be taken alongside A Level courses; these courses usually consist of around 50% coursework. Work is assessed throughout the course, which means students can keep improving and do not need to rely solely on exam results at the end of the 2 years. AS Level Maths in Context This course is ideal if you are not taking A Level Mathematics but have an interest in studying Maths past GCSE. The course is assessed in two, 2 hour written examinations at the end of Year 13. AS Level Maths in Context works particularly well alongside A Levels in: Economics, Business, Product Design, Psychology and Sociology. EPQ (AS) Designed to foster independent research skills and critical thinking, the EPQ allows students to delve into a topic of their choosing that aligns with their interests or career aspirations. Often extending beyond the curriculum, this researchbased qualification provides an excellent opportunity for learners to explore their passions, develop essential academic skills and enhance their preparedness for higher education or the workforce.
How to choose your courses At HGSS we offer 5 pathways for students applying to Sixth Form. From September 2026, these pathways will depend on an Average Points Score across a student’s Best 8 subjects. Each of these pathways also has a minimum requirement for GCSE English and Maths. We are pleased to offer a range of A-Level and AAQ Qualifications and use our pathways model to ensure students are on the best programme possible to ensure a successful journey through the Sixth Form. For information on courses, please visit https://www.hgss.co.uk/page/?pid=27 Your APS will be calculated as follows: Therefore, a grade suite of: 2 x Grade 9, 3 x Grade 8, 4 x Grade 7s and a Grade 5 would give you an APS of: (9+9+8+8+8+7+7+7) /8 = 7.87 This would put this student on Pathway 1. Extra-Curricular Programme Our Extra-Curricular Programme offers an extensive range of activities, which provide opportunities for our students to demonstrate leadership, initiative, mentorship and team-work. Students can take part in activities that complement their academic course options or try something different and develop new skills or improve existing ones. We are very proud of the input our Sixth Formers make to the school and wider community. Many students give of their time generously to numerous initiatives but at the very least, we expect every student to undertake at least one activity in each year of study: Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, Sports Leadership Award Scheme, MIND Mentoring Scheme, DEI (Diversity, Equality and Inclusion) Prefects, SUSU (Stand up, Speak up) Mentors, Debating team, Careers Ambassadors, Sixth Form Student Working Party (Year 12 and 13), Student Senior Leadership team (Year 12 and 13), Subject Mentors (Year 13), Enrichment Programme. Our Wednesday afternoon enrichment sessions provide students access to a wide and diverse set of experiences including sporting, cultural, well-being and fitness, creative and entrepreneurial life-skills. Above all, these afternoons will hopefully involve a bit of fun! • Healthy Cooking on a Budget, Baking, Vegetarian Cooking and Vegan Cooking, • Sports and Fitness activities including Football, Netball, Basketball, Rounders, and use of the multi gym • Wellbeing activities: Dance, Yoga and Pilates • Life skills and practical activities: First Aid, British Sign Language qualification • MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) • Creative activities: Lino cutting, henna art workshops, crocheting, photoshop, pattern cutting and dress making etc. • Additional and practical support with applications for UCAS and apprenticeships
Our Employability programme is designed to ensure that our students develop an understanding of the skills necessary to succeed in the world of work. Year 12 Community Service In Year 12, students are expected to gain key employability skills while contributing to the school community, exemplifying the school motto of “Work hard, be kind, and have passion”. They are expected to support a teacher in a lesson each week, in a subject that reflects their career goal. It is hoped that through this experience students will demonstrate leadership, negotiation skills, initiative, problem solving, resilience and many other attributes which will make them a strong candidate, desirable to any employer. Work Experience: Year 12 Summer 2 In order to ensure that every student leaves us in the best possible position to achieve that place at university, or on a higher-level apprenticeship or in their dream career, our Year 12 students are asked to find a week-long work placement for the end of the summer term. This work placement needs to reflect the student’s career goals and should enable them to gain a real insight into what that career sector has to offer and whether it would suit them. Previously our students have secured placements in the Health Service, teaching, accountants, solicitors, architects, design studios, the House of Lords, the British Nutrition Foundation, Law Courts, business management, with some leading to apprenticeships or full-time employment once the student left Sixth Form. The value of the employability skills adopted through this work experience cannot be underestimated. All of these opportunities we believe are a vital part in making our students confident, articulate, mature citizens, highly desirable to universities and employers alike. Employability Programme
Super Curricular Programme Super Curricular endeavours play a crucial role in enhancing students’ academic profiles. They demonstrate not only their commitment to learning; but their intellectual curiosity and passion. Universities and employers often value super curricular activities as they demonstrate a candidate’s dedication to going above and beyond the standard requirements and contribute to a well-rounded and challenging educational experience. We strongly recommend that qualifying students take either Core Maths or the EPQ. Core Mathematics: (Maths in Context AS level) Maths in Context is designed to develop practical mathematical skills for real-world contexts and support other subjects like psychology, sociology, geography, and business. The skills developed in Maths in Context are specifically designed to enable young people to move on to the workplace and independent living. MIC carries the same UCAS points as an AS level and is graded A–E. It is well recognised by many prestigious Universities who look on applicants favourably with this course and even make a lower offer to students that take it and are going on to study a degree that has a mathematical element such as analysing data and statistics or using percentages and number work. AS –Level 3 maths courses are now in the public eye, it is also an advantage for students applying for apprenticeships and entering the workplace as it is being a more advanced level than GCSE. EPQ (Extended Project Qualification – AS Level) Designed to foster independent research skills and critical thinking, the EPQ allows students to delve into a topic of their choosing that aligns with their interests or career aspirations. Often extending beyond the Curriculum, this researchbased qualification provides an excellent opportunity for learners to explore their passions, develop essential academic skills and enhance their preparedness for higher education or the workforce. One of the key features of the EPQ is its flexibility, as students are required to produce a substantial piece of work, which can take the form of a research paper, an extended essay, a physical outcome or a performance. Throughout the process, students must demonstrate effective project management, research methodology and critical analysis, preparing them for the demands of university -level studies. The EPQ carries the same UCAS points as an AS level and is graded A*–E.
Our Sixth Form Futures Programme at HGSS, forms part of our broader careers plan, and begins in September of Year 12. It covers all aspects of students’ next step choices following sixth form. We firmly believe that employability skills are just as critical as academic qualifications to enable students to reach their goals. The Futures Programme is built to reflect this, it covers interview technique/assessment process preparation, CV building, LinkedIn profile creation, networking skills, UCAS support along with ongoing opportunities to interact with industry contacts and further education providers. We also aim to deliver bespoke careers sessions linked to students’ areas of interest which we learn about in their individual careers guidance meetings. These meetings take place in Year 13 with our Careers Lead, Miss Matthews, enabling HGSS staff to really understand and support the students work towards their goals and aspirations. Careers and Apprenticeships The Futures programme encourages students to explore their career options in more depth, learn about apprenticeships, the university application process and how to go directly into the workplace. This is further supported by our Work Experience Week for Year 12 in July. Miss Matthews is always working hard to build up a comprehensive network of links with industry, alumni and parent volunteers. Careers and higher education opportunities are also frequently advertised to students via email. Our alumni network is also rapidly growing through our dedicated LinkedIn Careers page, with ex-students coming into school to meet and present to our students. We are seeing more and more of our Y13 students successfully embarking on degree and high-level apprenticeships with companies such as PWC, Simpsons Engineering, Equity Networks (IT) and Pinewood Studios. University Many of our students opt to go to university, either directly from school or following a gap year. In September 2025, over 70% of our students took up places on a range of courses at a wide variety of universities across the UK. To keep their options open, we encourage all our students to apply for university, especially if they are unsure about their future plans. We offer our students a comprehensive package of support related to all aspects of university applications, frommaking decisions about which universities and courses to choose to choosing their university accommodation, support with student finance and the transition to university, which can be a daunting time. It also outlined the process of applications and brought in people who are specialists in their fields to explain their experiences. In addition, it gave us the opportunity to practice sutures which was an amazing task to have a go at. Overall, I would recommend applying for the scholarship as it really helped me understand how suited I am to a career in medicine.
