HGSS is committed to developing character in all our children and providing them with an extensive range of curricular and extra curricular opportunities. Every subject area offers educational trips to support learning within their specific area and in addition students with whole school responsibilities such as prefects, members of the school council or sports committee leaders have opportunities to represent the school at local and even national events. Below is just a flavour of the many clubs, activities and trips available throughout the school year. Please follow the links on this page or visit the subject links on the curriculum page to do full justice to all we have to offer at HGSS.
Highlights have to include the wonderful opportunities to travel abroad provided by the humanities and modern foreign languages teams as well as our ski trip. Please visit our Trips page and click on our interactive map for pictures and full details.
On a daily and weekly basis the school is very much alive and thriving after the final bell with a host of clubs and activities for students in all year groups. Sport is particularly popular with all year groups featuring teams in a variety of sports that compete extremely well against our local rivals. Student led activities are very popular and we are especially proud of our student Sports Committee who run our breakfast club every Wednesday and Friday before school – the perfect way to get body and mind set for learning! Sports leadership in the Sixth Form involves our students coaching children from local primary schools as well as promoting competitions in school. Indeed such is the extraordinary range of activities, we hold a special Sports Dinner at Adams Park each summer to celebrate sporting achievement and contributions across the school
Dance and drama is another area of significant success with two high quality annual events being our school production and Gym and Dance show. Both feature high numbers of students who contribute on stage and behind the scenes where our well trained tech crew ensure everything runs smoothly.
We hold music concerts every term and range from classical to popular with our much praised Swing Band who are invited to play at many local venues throughout the year.
Not forgetting the design, art and technology faculty whose classrooms are filled at breaks, lunchtimes and after school with enthusiastic students whose work is celebrated in our outstanding exhibition in the summer term.
Finally, as a Business and Enterprise school, we run ICT clubs for students of all ages as well as our highly successful Young Enterprise teams in Year 12. Taking on their peers from all our local schools, we are regular winners ensuring that our students learn to develop that “competitive edge” that we believe is so vital to their future prospects in life.
