Learning support department and Speech and language resource

Learning support department

The role of the department is to support students to access the mainstream curriculum. We do this by supporting in some lessons, providing interventions for reading and literacy and assessing for and delivering appropriate exam concessions.

Working with students

Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) work closely with faculties to promote effective teaching and learning. Students are supported socially and emotionally within school with an opportunity for out of lesson and lunch and break support as required.

Working with outside agencies

The school is supported by outside agencies such as CAMHS, the Education Welfare Service, the Educational Psychology Service, the Specialist Teaching Service and Outreach Services.

Working with parents 

We are always available to see prospective parents and students at the school open evening, and happy to talk to parents at other times of the year. If you require an appointment please make contact with school on the main school telephone number.

Speech and language resource

Aim

The Speech and language Resource works towards pupils becoming effective independent learners equipped with an appropriate range of life skills.

Supporting Pupils

Holmer Green Senior School supports full inclusion of pupils with special educational needs. The Speech and Language Resource works with pupils directly to develop their language, learning and social skills by providied.

Supporting and Training Staff

The Speech and Language Resource aims to increase awareness of speech and language within the whole school curriculum. By working together as part of the school team, the Speech and Language Resource will co-ordinate the exchange of skills to promote the effective inclusion of pupils with speech and language difficulties.

Admission to the Speech and Language Resource

The Resource serves the whole of Buckinghamshire. Pupils are placed here by the decision of the LEA. All pupils have a statement of special educational need stating language and communication difficulties as the primary area of educational need. Six Year 7 places are available each September.

Accommodation

The Speech and Language Resource is a purpose-built facility and opened in September 2002. It consists of a suite of rooms designed for small group work and individual speech and language therapy.

Staffing

A team of enthusiastic specialist staff consisting of Speech and Language therapists, teachers and Learning Support Assistants are employed by the school to support pupils in the Speech and Language Resource.
