CAREERS, PERSONAL, SOCIAL, HEALTH AND CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION

Students in Year 7 receive lessons in Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education, which will also include Careers Education appropriate to their age.

The aim is for students to develop life skills.  This is achieved by students recognising their strengths and opportunities, skills and values, likes and dislikes, and developing a greater understanding of themselves.  The Careers Education element of the course, which is supported by the Connexions Service, will also contribute towards the preparation of the students for the transition to adult life.  In particular students are taught about their rights and responsibilities as citizens.  The course encourages students to develop their relationships through appropriate methods of communication.  Students will appreciate the decisions that have to be made regarding their future and feel confident in making them.

The PSHCE course covers a wide range of issues relevant to each particular year group and, although there is written work involved, lessons are primarily of a discursive nature.  However, it is recognised that various teaching and learning methods need to be employed if all students are to be encouraged to develop and be given the opportunity to experience a degree of success and achievement.

These include:

  • Videos
  • Reading
  • Games
  • Role play
  • Outside speakers
  • Circle time
  • Quizzes

Homework is set when appropriate.  There is assessment through active learning in individual, paired and group activities.
