Inclusion Unit (‘The Pod’)
The Inclusion Unit at HGSS is organised to help our students stay focused on learning and address issues which may prevent them from doing this. The objective of the three Inclusion Unit staff is to direct students away from behaviour which may result in exclusion and towards more positive attitudes to learning. The Unit consists of a main area called I3 (The Pod), with adjacent withdrawal rooms and a meeting room, a classroom (I1) and a smaller meeting room/office (I2).
The Inclusion Unit has three purposes:
- To educate students timetabled there for lessons (perhaps due to a reduced timetable)
- To integrate students back into mainstream classes after an incident or period away from school
- To isolate students for punishment following an incident in school
Strategies include supporting students with their organisational skills, social skills and behaviour for learning. The Inclusion Unit staff undertakes work with students within the Unit and in the students’ classrooms.
The Inclusion Team meets every fortnight to discuss the needs of students and how to structure working practices to best meet these needs. Meetings are also held each week with the broader Inclusion Team, which includes Key Stage staff, Attendance staff and SEN staff. Parents are informed of work being undertaken and the outcomes of that work.
