HGSS is committed to ensuring every child in Year 7 experiences as smooth a transfer and transition as possible as he or she moves from primary to secondary school.
Led by our dedicated Head of Year 7, Miss Amanda Edwards, and her team of Form Tutors, our students receive outstanding support and guidance as they manage the new challenges all children experience at secondary school – be these organisational (“What do I put in my school bag?”), logistical (“How do I navigate such a big school?”) or social and emotional (“Will I make friends and fit in?”)
Support comes in many forms, not simply adult, and our team of Year 10 Mentors are a long established support base for children in Year 7. Every child is given a mentor who has been specially trained to support and advise younger children and support them through the transition.
Miss Edwards is supported by our Key Stage 3 Pastoral Manager, Mrs Charlotte Shoyer, (a non teaching member of staff) who is on hand to assist when and where necessary and, for parents, is at the end of a phone whenever information is required or needed to be shared between home and school.
The partnership between home and school is essential for us and we provide frequent opportunities to update parents on their children’s progress. We have a “New Parent’s Induction Evening” in July as well as a “Meet and Greet” evening in early September when parents have a chance to chat with their child’s Form Tutor and discover how he or she is settling in.
